The statistics associated with dental anxiety are astonishing, and a huge number of adults avoid visits to the dentist each year because they fear even a cleaning or checkup. Just why people become fearful of the dentist varies from person to person, but one thing is usually the same for all, and that is that they end up with dental pain and high costs for complex treatments when all of that was avoidable. It is why we at Rivercrest Family Dental in New Braunfels, TX are glad to offer sedation dentistry for any sort of treatment or care.
Understanding Sedation Dentistry
It is important to understand that sedation dentistry is not the numbing done when we know there is risk for discomfort during a treatment. That sort of service is something we offer and provide to all, regardless of their level of anxiety. When we discuss sedation dentistry it is a way of reducing anxiety and fear that can cause a patient to avoid care, struggle during treatment or even find themselves paying numerous visits to our dental office to get work done.
After all, some patients become anxious and fidgety during a treatment, even when they have been numbed to pain. This can make it very challenging for our dentists to get the job done safely and effectively, and it can make it necessary for a patient to return if they need multiple treatments.
Fortunately, sedation dentistry allows our patients to find ways to relax during procedures, even feeling as though they have slept through an entire procedure or two.
We offer two forms of sedation:
- Oral sedation
- IV sedation
As you might guess, oral sedation is done with a prescription medication. You will typically take it before you head to our dentist office for the appointment, or upon arrival. Once it has taken effect you are then given treatment, though you might also require IV or intravenous sedation as well.
As you might guess, if you use oral sedation prior to the treatment you will require someone to bring you to the dental office and take you home afterward. The same applies with IV sedation. However, with an IV, there is no sense of sleepiness or a “twilight” drowsiness. Instead, you are moderately sedated and may be nearly unconscious throughout the treatment. This is ideal for those who require a more involved treatment or who have great anxiety about dental visits.
IV sedation is not as readily available in many dental offices, but is often preferred by those who would like to remain unaware of the treatment throughout the entire process. Rivercrest Dental is the only dentist office in New Braunfels area to offer IV Sedation! This is why we are so glad to make it available.
Ideal for those with moderate to severe dental anxiety, those who want a pain-free experience, or those who wish to get the most work done in a single visit, sedation dentistry is a great opportunity.
